Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 One could safely say that freshman softballer
Riley Husom has now grown accustomed to the pace. The Champlin, Minn. native rapped out four hits and raised her batting average nearly 50 points Tuesday in the Pipers' 9-8 and 3-1 losses at Northwestern. Husom, who plays left field, bats leadoff and now tops all HU regulars with a .382 batting average (13-for-34). She had three hits and knocked in a run in the first game as the Pipers rallied from a four-run hole but came up a run short.
In the finale, she had one of the team's three hits (a double) and scored the lone run.
It was a day of opposites. In the first game, both teams hit the ball with reckless abandon. HU had 13 hits. In addition to Husom,
Aubree Douglas.
Abbie Annen and
Megan Rubbelke banged out two hits apiece. Unfortunately, a six run fourth inning gave UNW a 9-5 edge and the Eagles held off a seventh inning rally for the win. HU had the go-ahead runs on base when the game ended.
Pitching dominated the second game.
Sabrina Warden worked 4.2 scoreless innings before giving way to
Kira Krueger. The Pipers were stymied at the plate as well until the sixth when Husom doubled and eventually scored on a Douglas ground out. UNW, however, struck back for three tallies in the bottom of the frame to win the game. In addition to Husom,
Blair Tommelein had two hits for the Pipers.
The Pipers, now 7-7 overall, are off until Wednesday, April 4 when they are slated to take on Macalester at Meredith Field at 3:30 p.m. in a MIAC season opening doubleheader.
