The Hamline men's track & field team roared away to a good start on the first day of the MIAC Outdoor Track & Field Meet. The Pipers had a pair of impressive wins en route to finishing the day leading the pack with 55.5 points. (Concordia is a close second with 54). HU also qualified several athletes for Saturday's finals at Macalester College.Â
Anthony Tyler (pictured) unleashed a 167-0 discus throw to lead a 1-2-3 HU finish in that competition. Tyler's throw currently sits 10th in Division III, well within current range of qualifying for the NCAA Division III meet at the end of the month.Â
Joey Grussing was second (149-10) andÂ
Pierce Heston took third (147-09).Â
Mark Volker overwhelmed the competition to win the Pole Vault with a 15-0 1/4 leap.Â
Joey Matheson finished in a tie for fifth place (14-2 1/2).
HU also got points in the first day finals fromÂ
Jordan Steward (3rd place tie, High Jump), the 4 x 800 relay team (3rd),Â
Nathan Rock (5th, 10,000 Meters), and the tandem of
Derrick Mora (7th) andÂ
Jacob Pederson (8th) in the Long Jump.Â
In the running prelims,Â
Tom Larson had the fastest time of the day in the 100 Meters (11.12) to advance to Saturda's finals. The junior ran second in the 200 Prelims (22.45). He has recorded the fastest times in the conference this spring in both events.Â
Isaac Krause ran the fastest 800 Meter prelims (1:54.45). Other qualifiers included:Â
Eric Hanson (3rd) andÂ
Rex Gould (4th) in the 110 Hurdles;Â
Will Warmka (5th) in the 400 meters andÂ
James Logan, who claimed the 12th and last spot in the 1500 meters. In addition, the 4 x 100 relay team will be in Saturday's title race.Â
