A familiar name – Tressel – will again be involved in the Hamline University football program. Luke Tressel (pictured), who played four seasons for the Pipers and whose, father, Dick, is the winningest football coach in school history, will be returning to his alma mater as an assistant coach for the 2013 season.

New HU head coach Chad Rogosheske made the announcement that Tressel, who teaches at St. Anthony Village High School, will be working with the team’s wide receivers. “I’m thrilled to have another HU guy on board as we work to get this program better each day,” Rogosheske said. “Luke has a lot of experience as a coach. That will be invaluable to us as we move forward.”

Tressel was a four-year defensive back at Hamline, graduating in 2001 with a degree in Physical Education. He started coaching right away as an administrative assistant at the University of Minnesota. He spent two more years as a graduate assistant with the Golden Gophers before being promoted to the fulltime staff in 2004. He worked as an assistant strength and conditioning coach and then did two seasons as wide receivers coach, leaving after the 2006 season.

Since 2007, he has been coaching with the Huskies, serving as defensive coordinator and also working with wide receivers and the offensive line. “Great to be back at Hamline,” Tressel said. “It holds a special place to me. This is a great conference and I look forward to being back in it.”

Tressel, who also coached against his father when the latter worked at Ohio State, will go against him on September 21 when the Pipers open MIAC play against Carleton at Klas Field. Dick Tressel is now the offensive coordinator for the Knights.

Rogosheske said he expects to announce more assistant coach hirings in the near future.
